Traditions are a blissful and happy thing for families and couples. You can even have a small tradition that you keep for yourself - something sacred and special just for you. Maybe your family decorates your home for the winter holidays on Black Friday. Perhaps you go for a brisk walk by yourself after the first snow of the season – with a warm cup of hot chocolate to help keep you warm.
Our family is no exception. For example, Joe and I always ring in the New Year with a celebration at our house. We order the traditional Chinese takeout from our favorite restaurant and invite some of our nearest and dearest to the soiree.
Last year I played bar maid and served up some cocktails. I designated the Cosmopolitan to be the signature cocktail for the evening and all of the girls loved them. Classy and modern with a feminine twist.
The secret to a delicious cosmo is to use a quality vodka. Give it a good shake in a cocktail shaker filled with ice and then pour into a cocktail or martini glass. You could use a top shelf brand such as Grey Goose or Belvedare, but I find that Stolichnaya and Absolute vodka to be a good choice for this cocktail.
For my recipe I substitute a fresh lime for Roses Lime Juice because it gives my cosmo a clean and crisp taste. Here is the Cosmopolitan recipe that I used:
1.5 oz vodka
2 splashes of Ocean Spray cranberry juice
juice of half a lime
maraschino cherry for garnish
Add some ice and water (or soda water) to a martini glass and set aside to chill while you make your cocktail. Fill a stainless steel shaker with ice. Add vodka, cranberry juice, and lime. Shake well. Dump the ice from your martini glass and strain the cocktail into the glass. Garnish with a maraschino cherry.
